Close your eyes for a minute and imagine what life would be like if you had a hundred dollars less. Also imagine what it would be like spending the rest of your life with your eyes closed. Imagine having to read this page, not with your eyes but with your finger-tips.

With existing medical knowledge and skills, two-thirds of the world’s 42 million blind should not have to suffer. Unfortunately, rich countries possess most of this knowledge, while developing countries do not.

ORBIS is an international non-profit organization which operates the world’s only flying teaching eye hospital. ORBIS intends to help fight blindness worldwide. Inside a DC-8 aircraft, there is a fully-equipped teaching hospital with television studio and classroom. Doctors are taught the latest techniques of bringing sight back to people there. Project ORBIS also aims at promoting peaceful cooperation among countries.

ORBIS tries to help developing countries by providing training during three-week medical programs. ORBIS has taught sight-saving techniques to over 35,000 doctors and nurses, who continue to cure tens of thousands of blind people every year. ORBIS has conducted 17 plane programs in China so far. For the seven to ten million blinds in China, ORBIS is planning to do more for them. At the moment, an ORBIS is working on a long-term plan to develop a training center and to provide eye care service to Shanxi Province. ORBIS needs your help to continue their work and free people from blindness.

For just $38, you can help one person see; for $380 you can bring sight to 10 people; $1,300 helps teach a doctor new skill; and for $13,000 you can provide a training program for a group of doctors who can make thousands of blind people see again. Your money can open their eyes to the world. Please help ORBIS improve the quality of life for so many people less fortunate than ourselves.

B

I have been blessed with opportunities in my life, and it took the near-death of my dad to make me realize that my purpose in life is to help others. My dad was diagnosed with leukemia and watching the pain and treatment that he suffered inspired me to be a more kind and giving person. It was like a smack on the face and I woke up one morning and realized life is just too short and it was time for me to make a chance.

My dad needed a bone marrow transplant. He was given a procedure in which he was able to reuse his own “cleaned” marrow, so a separate donor was not needed. That was excellent news as donors that are a match are hard to come by. The process inspired me to become a bone marrow donor and hopefully help someone else one day. I also ran a marathon to raise money for the Leukemia Society. I barely made it to the finish line, but all I could think about was that I had to finish. The so-called pain I was in was nothing compared to what cancer patients go through.

Yet, I was not satisfied with just that. Later I became an organ donor. I also donated blood, and now I keep on doing anonymous acts of kindness and seek opportunities to do so daily. Some days the opportunity presents itself very clearly and some days I have to seek it out. Either way, it comes.

I would like to leave you all with one of my favorite quotes from the late and great Mister Rogers: “I recently learned that in an average lifetime a person walks about 65,000 miles. That’s two and half times around the world. I wonder where your steps will take you. I wonder how you’ll use the rest of the miles you’re given.”

I want to use my miles to create footprints of love in this world.

39. According to Paragraph 1, what change does the author want to make?

A. To value lives more.

D. To work harder for more opportunities.

40. The underlined word “that” in Paragraph 3 refers to ______.

A. the organ and blood donations

B. the success in finishing a marathon

C the donation of bone marrow and the money collection

D. the excellent news that a separate donor was not needed

41. According to Paragraph 3, the opportunity to do kind things ______.

A. needs creating B. brings love

C. waits for no one D. comes every day

42. Which of the following statements is the author most likely to agree with?

A. Well begun is half done.

B. Kindness needs no reward.

C. Do as you would want others to do.

D. God helps those who help themselves.
